It was midnight, he wasn't here.

She was alone in their room. Resting on the bed and thinking about noon, when they both had spent the time in each other's arms. She wanted to spend more time with him.

So, she was waiting for him.

But he wasn't here.

She waited a lot, a lot but eventually fell asleep.

***

When her eyes opened, it was early morning, the sun rays were falling on her face.

She looked around towards the bed but he wasn't there.

She felt upset guessing the fact that she slept alone the entire night, waiting for him.

She stood up slowly and moved towards the bathroom to finish her business and take a good bath.

After taking bath, she wore a beautiful yellow saree. Nupur walked outside only to find out Priya sitting in the kitchen and cutting vegetables.

She bent down and touched her feet to which Priya blessed her.

"Hum kaat dete hai sabjiyan didi, aap rehne dijiye."

["I'll cut the vegetables, didi. You don't need to."]

Priya replied with a smile,

"Koi baat nahi, tum khaane ki taiyaari dekho."

["It's okay, you take care of the lunch's preparation."]

"Nashta nahi banega kya didi?".

["Aren't we going to make breakfast, didi?"]

Priya shook her head,

"Dono Bhai bahar hai na, humne sookha nashta kar liya tha, maa ji ko bhi dediya tha, tum bhi karlo."

["Both brothers are out, right? I had a dry snack and gave some to maa-ji too. You should have some as well."]

She nodded, had her breakfast and started preparing lunch along with Priya.

***

At noon, when she stepped out to serve the food, she saw only her brother-in-law sitting in the Aangan.

When Abhigyan's eyes fell on her, he spoke to Priya,

"Abhisar bahar Gaya hai gaon se, kisi kaam se, kal subhe wapas aaega."

["Abhisar has gone out of the village for some work. He will be back tomorrow morning."]

Priya looked at her.

Nupur behaved calmly and served him the food although she was quite upset under the veil. So upset for the reason that he didn't even inform her before leaving.

After she had lunch along with Priya, she moved silently towards her room because she had no work, nothing.

At evening she cleaned her room a little bit, and at night somehow she drifted to her sleep as she already knew her husband wasn't going to come.

***

It was midnight, when she felt someone nuzzling into her breasts.

She opened her eyes slowly, rubbing the sleep out of it. Her eyes caught the sight of her husband, who was holding her by her waist.

He was awake and his eyes were just shut.

She didn't react, instead, she removed his hand from her waist and turned to another side.

He felt shocked.

He again snaked his hand around her waist and this time, she stood up from the bed.

He was just staring at her.

She corrected her saree and wrapped the shawl around her body.

Opening the door of their room, she moved outside because she needed to pee, her bladder wasn't supporting her, over that, her husband was pressing her belly again and again.

She finished her business and returned back after washing her hands.

Shutting the door, she kept the shawl aside on the chair.

Coming on the bed again, she rested on it against her back. He was still awake. Slowly, he shifted towards her and placed his hand on her stomach.

She didn't remove it this time, she just stayed quiet and closed her eyes.

He felt a little odd.

He shifted more closer and whispered in her ear,

"Naraz ho kya?".

["Are you angry?"]

She stayed quiet.

He understood her silence.

He placed a kiss on her shoulder and murmured,

"Kyu naaraz ho, kaaran toh bata do."

["Why are you upset? At least tell me the reason."]

She spoke silently,

"Humse toh koi matlab hai nahi aapko, kaaran jaan kar kya karenge."

["You have no concern for me, so what will you do knowing the reason?"]

His lips curved into a playful smirk. He hovered over her half body and looked into her eyes, turning her face towards him with his palm.

"Gusse se laal ho gayi ho, Nupur. Kis baat ka gussa nikaal rahi ho hum par yun taane maar kar?".

["You've turned red with anger, Nupur. Why are you taking out your anger on me with these taunts?"]

She stayed quiet, ignoring his gaze and turned her face away.

Without thinking twice, he held her jaw tightly, very tightly. She lowered her gaze, still not ready to look into his eyes.

He waited for seconds.

She didn't.

He growled angrily, tightening his hold more,

"Itni beetab ho Rahi ho apne khandaan se Milne ke liye? Abhi chor kar aa jae tumhe tumhare ghar par?".

["Are you so eager to meet your family? Should I just leave you at your home right now?"]

Her eyes flew up to look into his finally. What was he even thinking?

His mind is so filled up with hatred against her family that he thinks she is angry with him because of her family.

God.

She held his wrist and tried to free her jaw. But his grip was tight.

She whimpered a little out of his tight hold and he freed her immediately after he saw her struggling.

Her hands moved to her jaw, to sooth it, by rubbing her palm over it slowly.

His gaze fell upon the mark of his fingers over her white-complexioned jaw. Red marks.

He moved his fingers to touch it lightly, but she stopped him, jerking his hand away.

She stood up from the bed in a swift motion and walked away.

In a knee-jerk reaction, he held her wrist to stop her, but unknowingly, his hold was so tight that the bangles in her wrist broke into pieces.

She jerked back to look at him and he was surprised by his own act at what he had done unknowingly.

Without speaking any second word, she walked away after picking her shawl and opening the door of their room.

She walked away with tears in her eyes, straight away, outside the main door, without thinking of the consequences.

It was utter darkness outside.

She was walking senselessly, meaninglessly, not knowing where she was heading.

And suddenly, she felt someone pulling her by her waist in the darkness against a tree trunk.

She knew who it was, and she pushed him away with all her force.

He grabbed her arm tightly and pushed her again, against the tree and shouted,

"Pagal hogayi ho? Kaha Jaa Rahi thi itni andheri raat me."

["Have you gone mad? Where were you going in this dark night?"]

She gritted back,

"Kahi bhi, bas aapse door."

["Anywhere, just away from you."]

She pushed him again, trying to free herself but he encircled his hands around her waist, holding her tightly.

"Dekho, bahar me tamasha mat karo Nupur, andar chal kar Jo karna ho kar lena."

["Look, don't create a scene outside, Nupur. Come inside and do whatever you want to do."]

She pushed his chest away, tears rolling down her eyes,

"Nahi jaana Hume uss Ghar. Jahan aap rehte hai. Jahan aap hume baar baar sirf taklif dete hai. Nahi jaana Hume."

["I don't want to go to that house. Where you live. Where you keep causing me trouble again and again. I don't want to go."]

He gulped and tried to cup her face but she jerked his hand away again.

He leaned forward, towards her ear and muttered,

"Hum nahi jaante the churiyan toot jaegi tumhare haath me. Sach, jaan. Hum bas tumhe rok rahe the."

["I didn't kn|w the bangles would break in your hands. Really, jaan. I was just trying to stop you."]

She pushed him away. His face jerked back.

She yelled angrily,

"Aap kisi din gusse me hum par haath bhi utha denge Abhisar. Aur fir uske liye bhi koi bahana bana denge."

["Someday, you might raise your hand in anger against me, Abhisar. And then, you'll come up with some excuse for that too."]

He shook his head, holding her arm,

"Kabhi nahi. Hum kabhi waisa soch-"

["Never. I could never think like that-"]

She cut him off,

"Soch nahi sakte? Soch nahi sakte aap?",

["You can't think? You think think of it?"]

She pointed towards her jaw,

"Aap kar chuke hai Abhisar. Dekhiye. Aapke khud ke haathon se hua hai yeh."

["You have done it, Abhisar. Look. It happened because of your own hands."]

He gulped. Stepping back.

She grunted,

"Aapko Darr lagta hai na ki aap kahi apne baap jaise na ban jae, Abhisar. Hume poora bharosa hai aapke baap ne Kam se Kam aapki maa pe kabhi haath nahi uthaya hoga, Abhisar. Aap toh ek kadam aage nikal Gaye unse."

["You're afraid you might turn out like your father, aren't you, Abhisar? I'm confident that at least your father might not have raised his hand on your mother, Abhisar. You've gone a step ahead of him."]
